Common things first

A place was matched to the wrong one

Tap the place in the list. The search opens with what Apple chose already filled in, and what the screenshot actually said shown above it. Search again and pick the right one. This happens most with chains and with places that share a name in another city.

A place was not found at all

It stays in the list, outlined, with the text that was read. Tap it and search by hand — the street name often works better than the business name. Confirming the right city when Wren asks makes this much rarer.

Wren asked me which city, and got it wrong

Type over it. Wren reads the city out of the caption in the screenshots, which is usually right and occasionally is not. You can also choose to search anywhere.

The guide did not appear in Apple Maps

Guides open in the Maps app, so make sure it is installed and not restricted. If Maps opened but the guide is empty, the list was probably too long — see below.

I pasted a link to my guide and Wren said it was not a guide link

Wren needs the link Apple Maps gives you when you share a guide: open the guide, share it, then choose Copy Link. If you have that and it is still refused, Wren could not reach Apple to read it — the link Apple produces is a short one that has to be expanded, which needs a connection. Check the connection and try again.

The places from my existing guide have no names

Apple's shared link carries each place's identifier and no name, so Wren asks Apple for the names separately. If that lookup does not answer, the group stays a count and will not open, rather than showing you a list of blanks. The places are still there and still publish correctly.

My guide came back with fewer places than it had

Apple silently drops a place whose record it no longer holds — somewhere that closed and was removed, or two entries it has since merged. There is nothing Wren can do about it: the place is correctly named in the link and Apple has nothing to resolve. Those places were already unreachable if you tapped them in Maps.

Wren made two guides instead of one

About a hundred and fifty places fit in one guide link. Past that Wren splits them into numbered guides and says so first. Maps takes one at a time, so tap the button again for each.

My file would not import

Wren reads CSV, KML, KMZ, GPX, GeoJSON and Google Takeout exports. It looks at what is inside the file rather than the extension, so a renamed file is usually fine. A row with nothing that looks like a place name is skipped, and Wren tells you how many.

I paid, and it is asking me to pay again

Tap the menu in the top-right and choose "Restore purchase". The unlock is tied to your Apple Account, so it restores on any device signed in to it, at no further cost. If it still does not restore, write below and include the Apple Account email you bought it with.

I would like a refund

Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too: reportaproblem.apple.com. Wren never receives your payment and cannot refund it directly.

Write to me

For anything not covered above. Include your iPhone model and iOS version if something is not working, and a screenshot if you can.

Replies come from Spencer Fields, usually within one business day. Your address is used only to answer you.
